Social and emotional development
  • Social and emotional development are often two terms used interchangeably and are closely linked. 
  • Social development is all about fitting in and adjusting our behaviours, often developing the ability to understand others through social activities. Often small group play such as: problem solving, creative tasks or even imaginative play aid social development.

  • Emotional development is focused on our individual feelings and own identity and developing concepts from our experiences. Helping children to develop awareness of feelings and how to control them is crucial in aiding healthy brain development, confidence and self - esteeem.

Parallel play 
Children aged 2 - 3 years old, are able to actively engage in parallel play. This is when two or more children are actively engaged in their own individual play but in close proximity. 

Proximity? Near each other in space or time.

Social and emotional development
The quality of social and emotional development often indirectly affects how children learn to form relationship, feel secure and develop a sense of confidence. 
There are many aspects that contribute to social and emotional development. 
  • Bonding and attachments 
  • Expressing feelings 
  • Forming friendships and maintaining them
  • Following instructions 
  • Co-operative behaviour (sharing / turn - taking)

Using the textbook, create a timeline of social and emotional development for birth - 19 years. 
You will need 1 x colour for emotional

Think outside the box and try put in your own examples.

Biological and environmental factors 
The sequence of development is the same for most children however the rate will vary in accordance to individual circumstances. 
For example: it is expected children sit up before they crawl. 
.. children crawl before they walk..
However the rate in which this happens can vary in accordance to biological and environmental factors. 
Biological factors - Information influenced by individuals genetic makeup, this can include: physical traits, physical health, SEND, Disabilities and personalities.
Environmental factors - Factors that influence children indirectly, our location, size of our family  or relationships we have with a primary carers.

Biological factors
Biological factors is influenced by a child's genetic inheritance or changes in a child's genetics ad chromosomes. 
In most cases genetic factors are immediately identifiable, such as: heart conditions, cleft palate or Down syndrome.
Physical traits - face shape, hair colour, eye colour, skin colour
Physical Health - Asthma, diabetes 
SEND - Autism, Foetal Alcohol syndrome 
Disabilities - Vision impairments, cerebral palsy, spina bifida

Environmental factors 
Environmental factors categorise things that happen around us, this could include the type of families have, where we live or experiences we have. 

Finances - There is a link between individual finances and development, this is because some children may not have access to the same resources as others. As well as considering the type of food children are eating, going on holiday and social clubs. 

Parental support - How much support children receive from their primary carer can contribute to the child's development. For this reason the EYFS (2023) clearly stipulates the importance of partnership working.  Reading books together, drawing and doing social activities will have a positive affect on children's development.

Create a information sheet for parents, you must clearly explain the following: 
* What does environmental and biological factors mean?
* Clear examples of each factor and how it can indirectly affect holistic development for children.
